Satellite imagery is usually read for change on the ground: a coastline receding, a city spreading. These studies look at the other kind of difference, the one in the picture rather than the place. Google Earth stitches its views from captures taken at different times, in different light, by different instruments, and the seams show: a field changing colour halfway across, ground lit from two directions at once. The seam becomes the subject rather than the error.
